FAM 04 - The Unfolding of Disease: Understanding Dosha Dynamics in Āyurveda - 22 & 23 January
Product Details

This module is part of the Fundamentals of Ayurvedic Medicine programme and develops a deeper understanding of how imbalance progresses into disease according to Ayurveda. It can also be taken as a standalone Continuing Education module.

Learn how Ayurveda understands the progression from early doṣic imbalance to established disease — and why recognizing these patterns early is fundamental to prevention and treatment.

This two-day Continuing Education module explores the natural movement and fluctuation of the doṣas, the factors that aggravate them, and the Ayurvedic process of disease development known as samprāpti.

Building on your understanding of doṣa, Agni, āma, dhātu and srotāṃsi, you will learn how multiple dietary, lifestyle, environmental and mental factors interact over time and influence where and how disease develops.

You will also explore the six stages of disease progression, the three Roga Mārgas (disease pathways), the importance of treatment timing, and foundational Ayurvedic principles of prognosis.

The emphasis is on learning to recognize patterns and understand the unfolding disease process rather than viewing symptoms in isolation.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the natural stages of doṣa accumulation, aggravation and return toward balance.
  • Identify internal and external factors that influence Vāta, Pitta and Kapha.
  • Explain samprāpti and the Ayurvedic process of disease development.
  • Recognize and analyze the six stages of disease progression, from early accumulation to manifestation and complication.
  • Describe pathology using key Ayurvedic factors including doṣa, Agni, āma, dhātu, srotāṃsi and Roga Mārga.
  • Explain how dietary, lifestyle, environmental and mental factors interact in the development of disease.
  • Relate disturbances of Agni to doṣic aggravation, āma formation and disease progression.
  • Differentiate the three Roga Mārgas and understand their significance in disease development.
  • Explain why the stage of disease influences the timing and complexity of treatment.
  • Describe foundational principles of Ayurvedic prognosis and the factors influencing whether a condition is considered easier or more difficult to manage.
