This module is part of the Fundamentals of Ayurvedic Medicine programme and introduces the foundational principles and methods of Ayurvedic assessment. It can also be taken as a standalone Continuing Education module.

Learn how Ayurveda brings together observation, questioning, examination, and clinical reasoning to understand the individual pattern behind imbalance.

This two-day Continuing Education module introduces the foundations of Ayurvedic diagnosis and assessment, with an emphasis on learning how to gather and interpret information systematically rather than relying on individual symptoms or a single diagnostic method.

You will explore the three Pramāṇas, structured Ayurvedic case history taking, functional assessment, doṣa-based interpretation, and foundational observational examination.

The module also introduces assessment of the dhātus and srotāṃsi, tongue diagnosis, urine evaluation, and foundational Nāḍī Parīkṣā (pulse awareness).

The emphasis is on integrating different sources of information to identify meaningful patterns of imbalance and begin developing structured Ayurvedic clinical reasoning within an appropriate professional scope.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you will be able to:

• Explain the foundations of Ayurvedic diagnosis and the role of observation, questioning, touch, inference, and clinical reasoning.
• Explain and apply the three Pramāṇas: Pratyakṣa, Anumāna, and Āptopadeśa.
• Conduct a structured Ayurvedic case history and gather relevant information about diet, lifestyle, digestion, elimination, sleep, energy, and mental state.
• Apply doṣa and guṇa principles to recognize patterns of Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha imbalance.
• Perform foundational observational assessment of body structure, skin, eyes, hair, nails, voice, posture, and overall presentation.
• Recognize foundational signs of imbalance in the dhātus and srotāṃsi.
• Interpret key tongue features in relation to doṣa, Agni, and āma.
• Explain the foundational principles of urine evaluation.
• Develop introductory awareness of Nāḍī Parīkṣā without expectation of diagnostic mastery.
• Integrate case history, observation, and basic examination findings into a preliminary understanding of imbalance.
• Apply a structured Ayurvedic reasoning process to simple case scenarios.
• Recognize the scope and limitations of foundational assessment and the importance of appropriate referral.
